Key concepts
The data size converter is for turning MB into GB and checking the 1000 vs 1024 gap. An SSD labeled 500GB is often SI 1000, while the GiB Windows shows uses 1024, so the number looks smaller. It converts file, disk, and memory sizes among B, KB, MB, GB, and TB and compares SI 1000 with IEC 1024. Showing every unit at once helps explain why disk marketing and OS displays differ—usually the 1000 vs 1024 base. Convert the same number both ways to see the gap. Bits and PB are not calculated. The same 1GB yields different MB figures on 1000 vs 1024, so switch the base when comparing a disk spec with File Explorer.
There are no PB, bits, or nibbles—up to TB. Math is local. You can use these bases to see why advertised SSD GB differs from Windows GiB. Filesystem overhead is not included. The selected base is applied to the KB label.
Example
1 MB in IEC (1024) is 1,048,576 B, 1,024 KB, and about 0.000977 GB. The same 1 MB in SI (1000) is 1,000,000 B and 0.001 GB. 1 GB (1024) is 1,024 MB—the usual reason a hard-drive spec and Explorer disagree. 16 GB is 16,384 MB on 1024 and 16,000 MB on 1000. A 5 TB disk also splits by base. 512 MB (1024) is 0.5 GB; SI 1000 makes it 0.512 GB. 2 TB likewise yields different MB figures by base.

Frequently asked questions
Does the converter show the difference between KB and KiB?
This tool applies the chosen base (1000 or 1024) to the KB label. It does not use the name KiB—only the base changes.
Are size numbers sent to a server?
No. Values are multiplied only in this tab, locally.
Can I convert PB and EB too?
Only up to TB. PB is not in the list and is not supported.
Is there a bit unit?
Only byte units. Convert bits yourself as bytes × 8. Do the same for bit rates.
Is data-size conversion exact?
It is a simple power-of conversion. Filesystem overhead and spare blocks are not included.
Why does a 500GB disk look like 465GB on the computer?
Manufacturers often use 1000 and the OS uses 1024. Switch the base to compare. Explorer often looks smaller because of 1024 notation.
