Key concepts
A public IP is the egress address seen on the internet. It is not a private address such as 192.168.x.x on a router. This page calls only api.ipify.org?format=json and displays the ip field from the JSON. Platform and User-Agent are read from navigator, not from a server. The lookup button fills platform and User-Agent first, then calls ipify. If that call fails, the browser strings may still remain. Reset hides the result panel again.
With a VPN, proxy, or company NAT, you see that egress IP, which may differ from your home router WAN. This site does not store lookup history or attach a location API. If CORS or a blocker stops ipify, the address stays empty and a failure message appears. Switching between mobile LTE and home Wi-Fi changes the egress. Some lines show IPv6 only. This tool does not draw a geolocation map.
Example
Pressing Look up IP fills a public IPv4 (or IPv6 depending on the environment), a platform such as MacIntel, and the browser User-Agent. Looking up again with a VPN on shows a different egress address. On the same hub you can split ranges with CIDR or build IPv4-mapped notation. On café Wi-Fi you see that venue’s NAT public address. On a company VPN it may be a data-center range. User-Agent can confirm the browser type.

Frequently asked questions
Is My IP showing a public IP or a private IP?
It is the public (egress) IP, not a LAN address on your router. It shows the address ipify sees. The IPv4 from Windows ipconfig is usually private. If that number differs from this screen, that is expected.
Which IP appears if I use a VPN?
The VPN server’s egress IP is shown. Disconnect and look up again to return to your home-line address. Split-tunnel VPNs may use a different egress for only some sites. If the ipify path goes through the VPN, that address is what you see.
Are User-Agent and platform shown too?
Yes. Platform is navigator.platform; User-Agent is the full string. They are not sent to a server to be stored. The platform string is whatever the browser reports and may not match the real hardware name.
Besides ipify, do you collect location or ISP?
No. No map or carrier-lookup API is called. As the notes say, only the IP is fetched. Carrier name and city are not shown. If you need that, check a separate service’s policy.
Why does IP lookup fail?
Network errors, ad blockers, CORS, and brief ipify outages are common. Allow ipify in your block list. A company proxy that blocks JSON will also fail. Temporarily disable the blocker or try another network.
Is lookup history stored on this site?
This tool does not save results on the server. For ipify’s own logs, see that service’s documentation. A refresh can leave the previous result visible, so resetting then looking up again is cleaner.
