How to use
- Enter a four-digit year in Birth year (solar). The default example is 1990. The range is 1–9999.

- The Rat→Pig order is the simple rule that Gregorian year 4 is the Year of the Rat. Lunar calendar and solar terms are not used.
- If you were born before Lunar New Year, tradition may treat it as the previous year’s animal; use that only as a note.
- Western zodiac and fortune sentences are not shown. Only the animal name is given.
Key concepts
The Chinese zodiac calculator (띠) finds the twelve earthly branches (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig) from the solar birth year only. The formula is (year−4) modulo 12. 1990 has remainder 6, so Horse. It is a zodiac calculator that finds the twelve animals (Rat through Pig) from the solar birth year only. The rule is (year−4) mod 12 with Gregorian year 4 as Rat. It is a calculator that reports only the twelve-animal sign from the solar birth year. There are no fortune or compatibility sentences; it is for entertainment and reference.
Lunar birthday, Ipchun (start of spring), and BC years are not handled. Only a positive integer year works. It is separate from international-age calculation and biorhythm, and is for entertainment and reference. Calculation runs only in the browser. Lunar calendar, Seollal, and Ipchun are not used, so a January birth before Lunar New Year may be the previous year’s animal depending on the family. There are no fortune sentences. A birth before Seollal may be the previous animal by family custom, but this screen looks only at the year number. There is no lunar conversion.
Example
Enter 1990 for Horse; the reference-year field shows (year−4) mod 12 = 6. 2024 is Dragon and 1984 is Rat. A January birth before Seollal may use a different animal than the calendar year in some families, so compare with family records. 1984 and 1996 are Rat; 2012 is Dragon. The default 1990 is Horse with remainder 6 after (year−4). 2000 is Dragon and 2008 is Rat. Default 1990 is Horse with index 6.

Does the zodiac calculator use a lunar birthday?
It looks at the solar year only. Lunar calendar is not entered. There is no lunar-birthday conversion on this screen.
Is the animal different if I was born before Lunar New Year?
Traditionally it can be the previous animal; use that only as a note. This tool looks only at the year number. Check the calendar yourself for whether it was before Seollal.
Are Western zodiac and the twelve animals different?
Yes. This screen calculates only the twelve earthly-branch animals. Signs such as Aries are a different system from the twelve animals.
Can BC years be used for the animal?
Only positive integer years are handled. BC years are not covered.
Does it also show animal fortune or compatibility?
It only reports the animal name. There is no fortune. Only the animal name is shown; there is no New Year fortune.
Is the birth year I entered saved?
