Key concepts: lottery prize withholding
Lottery prizes are often classified as miscellaneous income (Korea), and amounts below a threshold are tax-exempt. This tool simplifies to 50,000 KRW or less tax-exempt, 22% up to 300 million KRW (20% income tax + 2% local income tax), and 33% on the excess over 300 million KRW (30% + 3%). Prizes above 300 million KRW apply the rates by bracket.
Approximate net = prize total − tax by bracket. Donations, installment payouts, and combining with other income are not included. Results are for reference and can differ from actual withholding by 1 KRW.
Example
A 2 billion KRW prize is 22% on the first 300 million KRW and 33% on the remaining 1.7 billion KRW. Subtract the tax sum for an approximate net. Enter a 30,000 KRW prize and it is tax-exempt, so net equals the total. Second or third prizes that stay at or under 300 million KRW apply only 22%.
