Key concepts: 10% VAT
Under standard taxation in Korea, VAT is usually 10% of the tax-exclusive amount (공급가액). To recover the exclusive amount from an inclusive price, divide the total by 1.1. Checking first whether a quote is “VAT included” reduces confusion on invoices and tax invoices (세금계산서). Exclusive amount, VAT, and total are shown separately so you can align the basis with the other party.
VAT-exempt, zero-rated, and simplified-taxation (간이과세) industry rates are not applied. Rounding or truncation on a tax invoice can differ by 1 KRW, so treat this as for reference.
Example
A tax-exclusive 100,000 KRW gives VAT 10,000 KRW and a total of 110,000 KRW. Entering an inclusive 110,000 KRW splits exclusive amount and VAT again. Switch the input basis depending on whether the quote says “VAT extra” or “included.”
